The SIOP Model

Effective teaching requires utilizing teaching strategies and resources to ensure student learning.

One of the main strategies for ensuring effective instruction is The SIOP Model, which includes a comprehensive list of strategies for engaging students and providing them with the academic language skills they need to succeed.

The SIOP Model is a research-based, comprehensive, coherent instructional framework of effective teaching practices that combine sheltered instruction, English language development, and content instruction.

8 SIOP Strategies

  1. Lesson Preparation
  2. Building Background
  3. Comprehensible Input
  4. Strategies
  5. Interaction
  6. Practice & Application
  7. Lesson Delivery
  8. Review & Assessment

SIOP Model Strategies for Effective Differentiated Instruction

The SIOP Model is an evidence-based instructional model that uses a research-based lesson plan design, delivery, and assessment process to help educators support English language learners in any classroom.

List of SIOP Strategies

  • content objectives
  • language objectives
  • cooperative learning activities
  • visual/graphic organizers
  • scaffolding

Focus on Content Learning Strategies

Content learning strategies focus on connecting classroom instruction with the outside world.

Examples of content learning strategies include:

  • researching real-world problems
  • developing theories and hypotheses
  • utilizing multimedia sources to learn language vocabulary or math concepts
  • working through lab protocols and problem-solving exercises

Content learning strategies provide students with meaningful opportunities to practice academic content in realistic situations, furthering their ability to apply it beyond the classroom.

Language Objectives for SIOP Model Strategies

The SIOP strategies for language objectives focus on how students acquire the necessary language to comprehend the lesson’s content.

  • Lessons are based on the specific needs of students and illustrate how they will learn and practice new vocabulary, sentence structures, and more to grasp new concepts presented in class.
  • Language objectives in this model are designed to help students understand and interact with the content of a lesson while developing their language proficiency at the same time.

These objectives determine how the students learn and demonstrate their understanding of the content.

Provide Opportunities for Meaningful Interaction

One of the key strategies in the SIOP Model is meaningful interaction.

Whether in a whole class or small group, each student should have a chance to interact with their peers during every lesson.

This allows them to practice critical thinking while reinforcing core academic concepts.

Teachers assign students collaborative activities that are differentiated according to ability and purposeful conversations to create meaningful interaction.

Using Visual and Graphic Organizers as a SIOP Model Strategy

Visual and graphic organizers are incredibly helpful tools when incorporating the SIOP Model into language instruction.

Representing concepts and vocabulary visually through diagrams or charts assist ELLs in better understanding the material they are learning, thus improving their comprehension of the subjects being taught.

Not only do visual and graphic organizers help students understand the topic better, but they also provide a tool for ELLs to learn important new vocabulary.

Scaffolding as a Teaching Strategy

Scaffolding techniques are successfully incorporated into the SIOP Model to support students as they learn.

  • Scaffolding consists of breaking a complex task into smaller sub-tasks and providing guidance and support as students work on each step.
  • This method helps boost student engagement, foster higher-order thinking skills, and increase understanding of difficult or abstract concepts.

Establish a Confidence- Building Environment

Establishing an environment where students feel respected, valued, and appreciated is essential for promoting healthy student-teacher relationships.

Students must be able to express themselves openly and without fear in the classroom to engage in instruction fully.

Here are three strategies to use:

  • Create a safety net with rules of engagement and encourage positive behavior with praise and recognition.
  • Ensure fairness by being consistent with discipline policies and avoiding stereotypes or biases.
  • Celebrating accomplishments with all students.

With a confidence-building environment, students are more likely to take risks and participate in class activities.
