Teaching kids how to set boundaries is an important part of equipping them with the right tools to navigate relationships and protect their emotional well-being successfully.
From setting healthy limits with friends, family members, and caretakers to understanding and respecting the limits of others, here we explain why it’s essential for children to learn about boundaries and how parents can help them.

- Engage kids in conversation to establish personal parameters.
- Promote self-awareness.
- Show compassion toward self and others.
- Practice responding with empathy.
- Discuss strategies for responding to difficult situations or conversations.
- Provide resources with relatable role models.

Explain the Concept of Boundaries
The best way to start is by sitting down and discussing boundaries with your children.
Explain that boundaries are an important part of keeping themselves safe and respecting the dignity of others.
Talk about situations where it is appropriate to set boundaries, such as when someone makes them feel uncomfortable or scared. This will help them understand why it’s important to know how to say “no”, even in possibly difficult circumstances.
Remind them that declining conversations, invitations, or requests is okay if they don’t feel comfortable, even from people they like or trust.
Reinforce the idea that their decisions around setting boundaries are valid and should be respected.
Finally, let them know that if someone tries to pressure them into doing something that makes them uncomfortable, that person is not respecting their boundary.
Knowing how to stand up for themselves will help your children stay safe in any situation!
Engage Kids in Conversation to Establish Personal Parameters
It’s important to discuss boundary-setting before your kids encounter particular scenarios. Talk to them about their own expectations and engage them in conversations to understand their ideas of respect, autonomy, and personal space.
Encourage them to talk freely about how they want others to treat them and how they want to be treated. Additionally, it’s a good idea to involve your kids in developing clear limits that they should observe in different settings.
Getting kids to think about what their own personal parameters should be, will help them feel more empowered and self-confident when it comes to setting boundaries with others.
Additionally, establishing a habit of talking openly with your kids about boundary-setting helps ensure they don’t timidly accept behaviors or situations because they don’t know how to respond.
Talking to your kids in a safe and trusting environment can give them the confidence to speak up for themselves when they are uncomfortable or content in any given situation later in life.

Promote Self-Awareness
Self-awareness can help children recognize their emotions and be more aware of how they behave around others.
Help children understand that they have different feelings in different situations and with different experiences. Teaching children to self-regulate their emotions equips them with healthy coping strategies throughout their lives.
For example:
- Teaching children to reflect on how they are feeling.
- Giving children strategies for managing big emotions.
- Explain to children that they can take time to unpack their emotions before responding to a situation or difficult conversation.
- Encouraging children to use healthy self-soothing strategies to regulate their emotions.
Talking about feelings helps children learn how to respond appropriately when interacting with others. Most importantly, it teaches children how to self-regulate and manage their well-being.

Show Compassion Toward Self and Others
It’s important to teach kids that kindness is essential in any relationship. That includes being kind and understanding to themselves, as well as to others.
Showing compassion and understanding encourages healthy growth, increases self-resilience when things get tough, and demonstrates how others should be treated with respect. This helps kids set their own boundaries while also showing empathy and understanding the needs of others.
Set a good example of having healthy boundaries yourself and be mindful of language and attitude when speaking to and interacting with children of any age. Kids learn by observing, so if they see that you respect your boundaries and those of others, they will too.
Helping the child understand that they have the right to set limits with their peers or adults shows them how important it is to advocate for themselves.

Practice Responding with Empathy
Empathy helps children understand what others may feel, including when talking to or playing with others.
To help foster empathy skills in children, talk about what they could do when they think someone else might need help or encouragement.
Offering support, understanding their feelings, communicating effectively, and offering kind words are all examples of the skills children can learn for responding with empathy.
Discuss Strategies for Responding to Difficult Situations or Conversations
Help kids practice strategies for responding appropriately during difficult encounters or conversations. First and foremost, their safety is the number one priority. Setting clear rules around how children respond to situations where they feel at risk is crucial for families.
For example, having a safe word only you and your children know. This is helpful if children feel uncertain about an adult. They can ask the adult for the safe word, and if the adult doesn’t know the safe word, the child knows to get away from that adult. I used a safe word with my children, and in one instance, they asked the adult for the safe word, and the adult knew the safe word. My parenting strategy with this was to use the safe word, like a password, and once it was used, we needed a new password.
For other difficult situations or conversations, encourage children to listen attentively and patiently wait for their turn to speak during a conversation instead of interrupting other speakers or feeling angry about not getting heard immediately.
If a discussion becomes heated between two parties, suggest tactics like walking away from the situation calmly or taking deep breaths before speaking again to help reduce tension on both sides involved in a disagreement before returning to the conversation politely afterward.
